I am an associate professor of history at American University. I grew up on the West Coast and obtained my Ph.D. in History from the University of California, San Diego in 2011. My expertise is in modern Chinese history, with a focus on Xinjiang and the politics of archaeological expeditions along the Silk Road. This project grew out of a course I teach (“Antiquities, Exploration, and Empire: From Pompeii to the Moon”) at American University. I also teach and give public lectures on modern Chinese history, East Asian civilization, the Silk Road, and the Japanese empire.
